2024 Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Awards

Since its inception in 1999, Careers in Medicine® has supported the career decisions of medical students by working hand-in-hand with school liaisons who implement career development programs locally. Together, we have transformed medical student career development by formalizing programs, implementing innovative curricula, and training medical school advisors. In continuing to recognize the importance of effective career decision making and those who support students in this process, Careers in Medicine offers the Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising awards. This year, three awards will be presented:

• The Program Award recognizes the development and/or continued administration of “an effective career advising system...that integrates the efforts of faculty members, clerkship directors, and student affairs staff to assist medical students in choosing elective courses, evaluating career options, and applying to residency programs” (LCME Standard 11.2) with the aim of helping medical students with their career goals.

• The Faculty Advisor Award recognizes the accomplishments and commitment of a faculty member, clerkship director, or specialty advisor who is dedicated to helping students succeed in fulfilling their career goals by way of “choosing elective courses, evaluating career options, and applying to residency programs” (LCME Standard 11.2).

• The Staff Award recognizes the accomplishments and commitment of a student affairs staff member/coordinator who provides advising or programmatic support for a career advising program that aims to assist medical students in “choosing elective courses, evaluating career options, and applying to residency programs” (LCME Standard 11.2).

Nominations may be submitted by a medical school dean, designee, OSR representative, or other faculty or staff member.

Individuals may nominate themselves. A school may submit up to one nomination per award category; however, a school can only win in one award category in a given year.

The nomination must include:

• At least one (1) and no more than three (3) supporting documents (these can include but are not limited to letters of support from advisees, colleagues, and administrators, evaluations, institutional-level awards, representative advising materials developed by the nominee, and relevant articles/publications). Note: the supporting documents should add to, and not be repetitive of, the responses to the online nomination form.
