Plural Publishing Research Scholarships

Presented in honor of Dr. Sadanand Singh, CAPCSD promotes research by students in communication sciences and disorders. In support of this goal, Plural Publishing has generously agreed to fund two (2) scholarships to support graduate student research. There are two award categories: one Master’s/AuD level award intended for Master’s/AuD level students pursuing research in speech-language pathology or audiology and one doctoral-level award intended for Ph.D. students pursuing research in audiology, speech-language pathology, or speech-language-hearing sciences.

Award amount: One $3,000 scholarship per award category. This scholarship program is open to students of CAPCSD member programs with membership paid in full before Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Multiple applicants from the same member program can apply.

Frances J. Laven Scholarship

As co-owner of CAPCSD’s first management company, Frances Laven was instrumental in organizing the Council’s administrative and procedural foundations, beginning in 1989. From 2002 to 2013, Ms. Laven served as the Executive Director for CAPCSD and facilitated the growth of the Council and its many activities. As her duties continued to expand, she met her responsibilities with poise and an openness to the development of CAPCSD and its member programs. Her leadership exemplified outstanding service to both CAPCSD and the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. All who came into contact with her, particularly Board members, became enamored with personal yet professional style in handling all CAPCSD issues, big or small. The Frances J. Laven award was initiated in 2014 when Ms. Laven retired from her position with the Council. “Service” was the focus of the award to reflect her tireless efforts in forwarding the efforts of CAPCSD and the discipline.

Presented in honor of Frances J. Laven, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) promotes service by students in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In support of this goal, CAPCSD is funding one student scholarship to recognize exemplary student service. This award is intended for graduate students in a professional program (Master’s SLP, AuD or SLP-D) who have shown exemplary service. Examples of service may include but are not limited to, community service, service to the department or university, or service to the greater discipline.

Award amount: One $5,000 scholarship. This scholarship program is open to students from CAPCSD member programs with membership paid in full before Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Only ONE scholarship application per paid CAPCSD membership will be accepted. Members with multiple potential applicants should devise their own internal process and select the student who will apply. The student that is selected will complete the application.

Ph.D. Scholarships

CAPCSD is committed to addressing the Ph.D. shortage in communication sciences and disorders. To this end, CAPCSD will address a salient factor influencing the Ph.D. pipeline: time to degree completion. CAPCSD announces a scholarship program for students pursuing a research doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D.) focused on an academic career in communication sciences and disorders. CAPCSD will fund up to eight (8) scholarships of $20,000 each for successful scholarship awardees. These scholarships are intended for students who have advanced or will be advancing to the candidacy stage of their respective doctoral programs by June 15, 2022, (ABD). Doctoral students graduating in spring or summer 2022 can apply, however, priority will be given to those applicants completing their degrees in fall 2022 or beyond.

By June 15, 2022, applicants must have successfully advanced to the candidacy phase of their respective doctoral programs in a regionally accredited academic program, at a CAPCSD member institution with membership paid in full by Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

Member programs can nominate only one applicant for this scholarship. Programs with multiple potential applicants should devise their own internal review process to select one applicant. The selected graduate student will submit their own application.

While nominating an applicant for the scholarship, member programs should consider the feasibility of the applicant to advance to the candidacy stage by June 15, 2022. Scholarship awardees will be required to provide proof (letter from research advisor) verifying the candidacy/ABD status on or before the June 15, 2022 deadline. Awardees who are unable to meet this requirement cannot defer the scholarship to the next funding cycle.
