2019 Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (COCAN) Abstracts Program

Abstracts submitted for the Council on Child Abuse and Neglect program should focus on the identification, management or prevention of child abuse and neglect, or Adverse Childhood Experiences. Adverse Childhood Experiences can include but are not limited to household or community violence, poverty, food insecurity, parental or child mental health, household dysfunction and substance use. In addition abstracts that pertain to identifying or improving child or family resilience will be considered.

Four types of abstracts are encouraged:
  1. Research abstracts presenting original research findings. These abstracts should include pilot data on either process or outcomes variables.
  2. Case Reports presenting original findings from a clinical case.
  3. Quality Improvement abstracts presenting QI projects.*
  4. Program abstracts describing ongoing or completed projects; these can include program descriptions which are novel or innovative.

Special consideration will be given to abstracts submitted and presented by physicians in training at any level. Abstracts will be accepted for poster presentations only and will be selected at the discretion of the Abstract Review Committee. Prior publication disqualifies submission to this section however prior presentation is accepted.

Note that presenters who attend the National Conference & Exhibition must register and pay for registration (special abstract presenter rates are available), as well as any additional travel and housing expenses. The Council does not have funds to cover these costs for presenters.

COCAN Best Abstract Award
All accepted abstracts will be considered for the COCAN Best Abstract Award.Presenters of the three abstracts that receive the highest score will be asked to make a brief oral presentation at the program. The one with the highest score will receive the COCAN Best Abstract Award. The recipient of this award will be given the opportunity to present an update on their research during the COCAN program at the 2020 National Conference & Exhibition in San Diego, CA and reimbursement of a one-day registration from the Council.
