ABMS Visiting Scholars Application: 2024 - 2025


Welcome to the 2024 - 2025 ABMS Visiting Scholar Program Application Portal!


The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program™ supports the research of early-career physicians and research professionals and facilitates leadership development through engagement with ABMS and the broader certification community. The ABMS Visiting Scholar Program supports projects that address the research priorities and interests of the ABMS Research and Education Foundation (REF), participating ABMS Member Boards and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (GBMF). 


2024 - 2025 VSP ABMS - REF Research Priorities

  • Diagnostic and prognostic excellence within and across medical specialties
  • Adoption of competency-based medical education and assessments across certification programs
  • Racial equity and diversity across the health care continuum
  • Continuing certification programs impact on physician well-being
  • Physician engagement with quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
  • Additional research projects that seek to advance the ABMS Mission: To serve the public and the medical profession by improving the quality of health care through setting professional standards for lifelong certification in partnership with Member Boards.

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology 
  • Ophthalmology 
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

  • Urology 


Eligibility


  • Early career physicians, junior faculty, fellows and residents 
  • Individuals holding masters or doctorate degrees in public health, health services research, education evaluation and statistics, health policy and administration
  • Veteran Affairs (VA) trainees and researchers

Student visas are not available


Applying


Proposed research projects can be established research projects with a new scope of work or original research projects. A research mentor must be identified through the application process. 


Applicants should give consideration to the impact of their proposed research project on reducing health inequities and contributing to the development of a qualified and diversified workforce. 


An award of $15,000 is provided to support the direct costs of research and travel expenses associated with program participation.

The ABMS Visiting Scholar Applications must be received on June 17, 2024 by 11:59 pm CT.


Submission Instructions and Guidelines


  1. To begin your submission, select create account.
  2. Attest to the Cadmium privacy statement. 
  3. Complete all required fields in the form. 
  4. Create a new submission by entering the name of your research project. 
  5. Complete each required task: 
    • Applicant Demographics and Practice Information
    • Research and Project Information 
    • Abstract Summary, Research Background and Personal Statement
    • IRB Status, Project Timelines and Budget
    • Supporting Application Documentation (uploads)
    • Permission Statement, Scholar Research profiles ID and feedback
  6. To save your progress on a task, you must scroll to the bottom of the page and click continue. You will be directed to your submission home page; make sure to click "save submission" on the upper right corner. 
  7. Review your submission. 
  8. Click submit (you may edit your application up to the deadline, 11:59 pm CT, June 17). To get back into your partial submission, login to your Cadmium account and select your pending application.
