Call for manuscripts in Biomedical Research Education and Training scholarship

There is a critical need to elevate and disseminate evidence-based practices and emerging strategies that enhance the training and development of the biomedical research workforce. As the demands and expectations of the scientific and medical communities continue to evolve, there is an urgent call to address persistent and emerging challenges across all stages of research training, including fostering inclusive excellence, enhancing career outcomes (improving tracking, transparency, and trainee preparation to move graduates into a variety of impactful careers that support medical advances and care), and supporting the holistic development of trainees and faculty alike.

To meet this need, the AAMC GREAT (Group on Research, Education, and Training) Academic Publishing Working Group is seeking original research and innovations in biomedical research education and training. Abstracts selected by the Working Group will be invited for full manuscript development to support submission to and potential publication in Academic Medicine, an official, peer-reviewed journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges. The journal serves as an international forum for the exchange of ideas, information, and strategies that address the major challenges facing the academic medicine community as it strives to carry out its missions in the public interest.

The Working Group seeks to develop a collection of articles that encompass a broad range of topics related to graduate and postdoctoral (PhD) and physician-scientist (MD, MD-PhD, resident, and fellow) training as part of the biomedical research enterprise, including faculty development topics that address those serving as mentors, educators, administrators, and program leaders. We aim to highlight research that addresses systemic issues and opportunities in the biomedical research training and education pipeline, from admissions to career advancement and retention. Specific themes may include, but are not limited to:

• Educational and training program outcomes
• Curriculum development and pedagogical innovation
• Workforce development in biomedical research
• Career and professional development strategies
• Admissions, recruitment, and retention in biomedical and clinical training
• Physician-scientist development and dual-degree program design
• Faculty development, mentoring, and mentor training
• Mental health, well-being, and trainee support
• Building community, fostering belonging, and shaping professional identity
• Cross-cutting issues that span biomedical and clinical training populations

The impact of this collection will be substantial for the academic medical community and those supporting biomedical research education and training. By compiling high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship in these critical areas, this collection will serve as a centralized and influential resource for educators, administrators, program directors, policy makers, and institutional leaders. In addition, the collection will help highlight the societal value of excellence in research training—demonstrating how well-prepared scientists and clinician researchers are essential to improving human health and addressing complex biomedical challenges.

Instructions:
This call for submissions is open to the AAMC GREAT community and beyond. Interested authors may submit an abstract of their manuscript, along with specified additional requested information at (see website link) on the AAMC website. Abstracts will be evaluated by the AAMC GREAT Academic Publishing Working Group, and select abstracts will be invited for full submission to Academic Medicine. Following submission to Academic Medicine, manuscripts will be evaluated according to the journal’s publication standards and will follow the typical internal and external review process for all journal submissions. Neither peer review nor acceptance by the journal can be guaranteed.
