CAPCSD DEI Academy
April 11, 2023, Orlando, Florida

Registration fee for selected participants: $150 (includes breakfast and lunch)
Seating is limited to 50 participants

Program Description:
As part of its mission to provide academic programs with resources, strategies, and training needed to meet Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) is offering a program to develop knowledge and skills related to DEI and specific to CSD to equip individuals to facilitate conversations within their programs as well as at other institutions. The training will be delivered via the newly developed CAPCSD DEI Academy.

The DEI Academy will be held from 7:00 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, prior to the CAPCSD annual conference, at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando, Florida. The DEI Academy will be moderated by DEI Academy Co-Chairs, Dr. Maya Clark, and Dr. Jayne Brandel.

The academy will begin by providing participants with information as to why DEI should be infused into CSD education as well as evaluating biases (implicit and overt) and microaggressions that are present within CSD education. This will be followed by information to assist the learner in understanding the culture of their CSD program so that they can then lead the development of their program’s own Excellence Plan.

The CAPCSD DEI Academy will be held Tuesday, April 11, 2022, prior to the 2023 CAPCSD Annual Conference, at the Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek.

Topics to be covered include:
  • Examining internal and external barriers to change
  • Defining stereotypes, bias, and microaggressions in CSD education
  • Discussing strategies to mitigate bias and promote belonging
  • Identifying methods for determining readiness of the program to engage DEI
  • Connecting the program’s inclusive goals to the university’s strategic plan
