Each year the IACP highlights the incredible actions of law enforcement's finest frontline officers.

Each year the IACP recognizes an officer who has performed an act of valor, or exceptional service.

  • Nominees must be a sworn law enforcement officer employed within Indian Country.
  • A posthumous award may be made in the name of a law enforcement officer to the surviving spouse, child, or parent of such officer.

The IACP Pamela L. Scanlon Excellence in Criminal Justice Information Sharing Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated achievements in the improvement of criminal justice information sharing across jurisdictional lines, at all levels of government and with multiple disciplines. This award recognizes an exceptional leader who promotes and shares new technology, innovation, best practices, and lessons learned.

  • One nominee per technology
  • Must be an active technology through January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2022

Each year the IACP awards law enforcement officers for exceptional achievement. Every day, police officers perform selfless acts in their commitment to public service and community safety. Acknowledging these acts formally provides the opportunity to showcase exceptional work of the profession and provides the ability to emulate these everyday achievements.

The IACP Leadership in Community Policing award recognizes promising practices that utilize effective and long-lasting partnerships to make local, national, and global communities safer. This award recognizes agencies for programs that exemplify the principles of community policing and strengthen community trust through active and inclusive community collaboration.

Nomination Eligibility and Requirements:

Nominations will be accepted in the following sub-categories of this award:

  • Small Agency: Law Enforcement Agency with less than 50 sworn officers
  • Midsize Agency: Law Enforcement Agency with 50 - 999 sworn officers
  • Large Agency: Law Enforcement Agency with 1,000 or more sworn officers

The IACP Leadership in Crime Prevention Award recognizes innovative, data-driven, low-cost and high-impact crime prevention programs. Programs recognized for this award should exemplify effective crime reduction strategies and specific measures of success. Agencies must demonstrate how their crime prevention program builds community trust and increases community engagement.

The IACP Leadership in Victim Services Award recognizes agencies that best exemplify an organizational philosophy of placing victims at the center of their problem-solving efforts, utilizing effective partnerships, training methods and performance monitoring tools to enhance law enforcement response to victims of crime. Nominees should demonstrate an innovative approach to meeting the needs of crime victims within their communities and showcase a program that has been fully implemented or is in the process of being fully implemented into their agency.

Nominations will be accepted in the following sub-categories of this award:

  • Small Agency: Law Enforcement Agency with less than 50 sworn officers
  • Midsize Agency: Law Enforcement Agency with 50 - 999 sworn officers

The IACP Chief David Cameron Leadership in Environmental Crimes Award recognizes excellence in environmental crimes enforcement. This award is designed to recognize successful criminal enforcement actions undertaken by enforcement officers, enforcement agencies and multi-agency collaborations in the pursuit of justice for the detrimental effects of pollution, wildlife and resource crimes. The memorial award honors the late David Cameron, Chief of Police in Jackson, Wyoming. Chief Cameron’s professionalism and dedication to his community, department, as Chair of the IACP Environmental Crimes Committee and as a member of the IACP Executive Board from 1992-2001 is an exemplar of servant leadership.

The IACP August Vollmer Leadership in Forensic Science Award recognizes the proactive, innovative use of forensic technologies by law enforcement agencies and units. Exemplary programs will demonstrate how new forensic technologies and techniques advance criminal investigations and enable agencies to strengthen their evidence collection and analysis. Alternatively, agencies and units may demonstrate innovative uses of current forensic technology and techniques toward achieving these goals.

The IACP Excellence in Criminal Investigations Award recognizes exceptional innovation in managing and conducting criminal investigations, with the goal of sharing information to advance the art and science of criminal investigations.

The IACP Leadership in the Prevention of Vehicles Crimes Award recognizes outstanding achievement in preventing vehicle theft and crimes. Exemplary programs will showcase the connection between vehicle crime and subsequent violent crime. Nominated agencies will be evaluated on initiative, use of available resources, and overall results allowing agencies to share how they successfully curbed vehicle theft in their jurisdiction.

  • This is an agency level award. The nominated party must be a law enforcement agency, task force, council, community partnership, or other theft prevention alliance. Nominations for individuals will not be considered.

The IACP Leadership in Human Civil Rights Award recognizes individuals and agencies who have demonstrated leadership in protecting fundamental rights. This award showcases the achievements of agencies and individuals in protecting and promoting human and civil rights to enhance public trust and maintain cooperation and partnerships with communities. Please note there are two unique nomination types available for this award; Agency level and Individual.

The IACP Leadership in Volunteer Police Service Programs Award recognizes programs from around the world that demonstrate innovative, effective practices for augmenting sworn or civilian staff and/or improving service delivery to their communities through the effective use of volunteers. Established in 2003, the goal of the award program is to recognize the value that volunteers provide policing. This award promotes leadership among law enforcement agencies to develop and implement creative and effective law enforcement volunteer programs that utilize sworn volunteers or non-sworn volunteers as community ambassadors to build relationships and to prevent, investigate, and fight crime in communities. Programs recognized by this award are seen as "best practice" models which can be replicated and tailored to help better address the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies throughout the world.

  • The IACP Leadership in Homeland Security Award honors excellence and significant contributions to overcoming United States homeland security challenges. This award recognizes single agencies and multi-agency collaborative efforts that demonstrate significant contributions to information sharing and analytical work in the United States homeland security enterprise, and/or sound decision making during the preparation and execution of critical incident response, mitigation and recovery efforts resulting from acts of terrorism, and extremism in addition to natural or man-made calamity.

    The IACP Leadership in the Prevention of Terrorism Award recognizes agencies that have demonstrated overall success in averting, stopping, or countering terrorist activity. It is meant to highlight successful counterterrorism investigations and educate the law enforcement field on instances reflective of collaboration and communication best practices during terrorism investigations.

    The IACP Leadership in Transnational Crime Award recognizes outstanding efforts by law enforcement agencies in successfully mitigating the international threats to their communities by transnational criminal organizations. Exemplary programs will demonstrate innovative approaches to investigating and preventing transnational crime, as well as successful information and intelligence sharing practices.

    Nomination Eligibility Requirements:

    • The nominated investigation must have occurred, or have been completed between January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2022.

    The IACP Leadership in Police Aviation Award recognizes public safety individuals and agencies that exemplify excellence in airborne law enforcement operations for both manned and unmanned aircraft operations in the law enforcement community. This award emphasizes initiatives that enhance general safety operations, accident prevention programs, and the efficiency and effectiveness of airborne law enforcement. Please note there are two unique nomination types available for this award; Agency level and Individual.

    Nomination Eligibility and Requirements:

    • The nominated program or efforts must have occurred, or are still active between January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2022.
    • Efforts eligible for recognition may range from the unit level to the national or international level: including rotary, fixed wing, or unmanned aircraft operations. Any agency or individual that operates a manned or unmanned aircraft is eligible for the respective award type.

    Traffic safety is a key element of public safety. This is particularly true as the number of traffic fatalities across the world remain at unacceptable levels. Law enforcement and other government agencies as well as community organizations play a key role in maintaining safe roadways and communities. The International Association of Chiefs of Police is dedicated to promoting traffic safety and recognizing those organizations that excel in this area.

    The IACP Leadership in Public Information Management Award recognizes the accomplishments of an individual public information officer and his or her ability to effectively disseminate information to the public. Special consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate innovative use of social media and successful informative management during a critical incident.

    The IACP J. Stannard Baker Lifetime Achievement in Highway Safety Award honors the late J. Stannard Baker, who made significant contributions to highway safety. Mr. Baker served as Director of Research and Development at the Northwestern University Traffic Institute (now the Center for Public Safety) for over thirty years. During that time, he focused on the causes of traffic crashes and the techniques of collision investigation and reconstruction. He was known throughout the world as the “father of accident investigation.” Mr. Baker’s groundbreaking textbook, Traffic Accident Investigation Manual, is the worldwide standard.

    • Individual law enforcement officers, active or retired, and others in the field who have made outstanding lifetime contributions to highway safety are eligible.
    • An individual nominated for this award in a previous year is ineligible.
    • Individual must have worked in highway safety for a significant amount of time and have made significant contributions to the field throughout their career.

    The IACP Leadership in Looking Beyond the License Plate Award recognizes the dedication and initiative of individual police officers whose daily efforts during traffic stops play a large part in preventing additional, more severe crimes. This award is designed to substantiate and document the importance of license plates as law enforcement tools and recognize officers who use license plates to prevent and detect both civil traffic violations and further criminal conduct.

    The IACP Leadership in Civilian Law Enforcement/Military Cooperation Award recognizes excellence in cooperation between civilian and military law enforcement agencies. This award highlights the development of innovative joint efforts to improve public safety for both military and civilian communities.

    • This is an award based on collaborating partnerships.
    • Civilian and military law enforcement agencies that are collaborating to improve public safety for their communities are eligible.

    The IACP Leadership in Public/Private Cooperation Award, in honor of the late Chief Michael Shanahan, who served the University of Washington Police Department for 24 years before retiring in 1995 and served as the founding chair of the IACP Private Sector Liaison Committee, seeks to recognize outstanding achievement in the development and implementation of public/private cooperation in public safety. The IACP Michael Shanahan Leadership in Public/Private Cooperation Award recognizes partnerships between law enforcement agencies and private industries that have collaborated to build community trust and enhance public safety.

    • All law enforcement agencies in collaboration with their private partner(s) are eligible.

    The Webber Seavey Award recognizes tried and true solutions to a variety of problems that law enforcement officers face daily on the ground. These innovative programs serve as a blueprint to help ithers develop and strengthen their agencies to make their communities safer. The award fosters awareness of quality in law enforcement, to help recognize quality achievement in police projects and to promote sharing of information on successful programs.

    The IACP Leadership in Law Enforcement Research Award recognizes law enforcement agencies that demonstrate excellence in conducting and using research to improve police operations and public safety. The goal of this award is to promote the establishment of effective partnerships among law enforcement agencies and researchers.

    Nomination Eligibility and Requirements:

    • This is an award based on collaborating partnerships.
    • Nominees must be partnered with external research and/or a research organization.
    • Nominees must have completed a research effort in which they addressed an issue determined by agency leadership and used by the agency to improve policies and/or practices.
    • The deadline to submit a nomination for this award is March 31, 2023, 11:59 PM EDT.
    Training and education are delivered to frontline officers by members who are dedicated to public safety. Academy instructors are committed to the core values that make them role models and consistently go above and beyond the call of duty, no matter what agency they represent. The State & Provincial Police Academy Directors Section ensure these efforts are recognized through the IACP SPPADS Instructor of the Year Award.

    • The detailed project document - a written description of the project supported by appropriated charts, graphs, etc. Must not exceed ten type-written pages, single-spaced. Address the key considerations, where appropriate, for each category: project selection, analysis techniques, solutions, results and institutionalization.

    The IACP 40 Under 40 Award program is designed to recognize 40 law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 from around the world that demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment to their profession.
