We invite you to share your work for consideration for presentation at the APDS 2027 Annual Meeting, March 30 - April 3, 2027 at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio, TX!
Before you begin, please take a few minutes to review the presentation options, submission requirements, award opportunities, and policies below.
Presentation Types
Oral Presentation
If you submit your abstract for an oral presentation, it will be considered for either a full-length or Quickshot podium presentation.
If selected for either format, you will be required to submit a manuscript to the Journal of Surgical Education.
Not selected for the podium? Your abstract will automatically be considered for an ePoster presentation.
ePoster Presentation
If you prefer to have your work considered for a non-podium presentation, select the ePoster submission type.
Manuscript submission to the Journal of Surgical Education is encouraged but not required for ePosters.
Tools of the Trade
Have a practical tool or intervention that has helped address a challenge in surgical education? Tools of the Trade highlights established strategies addressing common or complex challenges faced by surgical program leadership and residents.
Your submission should describe the tool or strategy and include preliminary or final data demonstrating its impact.
If accepted, you will deliver a brief oral presentation and submit a manuscript describing the tool to the Journal of Surgical Education. Selected submissions will also be eligible for the Best Tools of the Trade Award.
What You'll Need to Submit
Having the following information ready will make the submission process easier:
- Principal contact and presenter information

- All co-authors must submit disclosure information

Abstract body of 300 words or fewer, including:
- Background
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusion
- One optional photo, chart, or table in .jpg format
Submitting to Tools of the Trade?
Your Tools of the Trade abstract should be 300 words or fewer and address each of the following:
- Define the Challenge: What specific challenge are you addressing?
- Tool Description: Describe the intervention or tool you developed to address the challenge.
- Methods: Explain how you implemented the tool, including time, participants, and resources.
- Results: Share qualitative or quantitative preliminary or final data demonstrating the impact of the intervention.
- Conclusion: Consider how the tool could be applied at other residency programs, next steps, and opportunities for multi-institutional collaboration.
- One optional photo, chart, or table in .jpg format
Award Opportunities
Outstanding Trainee Award
The Outstanding Trainee Award recognizes excellence in research and presentation by a trainee.
If you will be a Fellow, Resident, or Medical Student at the time of Surgical Education Week, your abstract is eligible for consideration. Simply indicate your eligibility during the submission process.
Best Tools of the Trade Award
Selected Tools of the Trade presentations will be eligible for the Best Tools of the Trade Award, recognizing an impactful intervention in surgical education.
Duplicate Submission Policy
Before submitting, please confirm that your abstract has not been previously presented or published and is not currently submitted to another national or international meeting with an acceptance decision pending.
If your abstract is accepted, the presenter must register for the APDS Annual Meeting and attend in person, barring extenuating circumstances.
What Happens After You Submit?
Your abstract will undergo a blind peer-review process designed to provide an impartial evaluation and maintain high standards of quality and fairness. Notifications will be distributed in December.
