Frances J. Laven Scholarship

As co-owner of CAPCSD’s first management company, Frances Laven was instrumental in organizing the Council’s administrative and procedural foundations, beginning in 1989. From 2002 to 2013, Ms. Laven served as the Executive Director for CAPCSD and facilitated the growth of the Council and its many activities. As her duties continued to expand, she met her responsibilities with poise and an openness to the development of CAPCSD and its member programs. Her leadership exemplified outstanding service to both CAPCSD and the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. All who came into contact with her, particularly Board members, became enamored with her personal yet professional style in handling all CAPCSD issues, big or small. The Frances J. Laven Award was initiated in 2014 when Ms. Laven retired from the Council. “Service” was the award's focus to reflect her tireless efforts in forwarding the efforts of CAPCSD and the discipline.

Presented in honor of Frances J. Laven, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) promotes student service in Communication Sciences and Disorders. CAPCSD funds up to ten (10) student scholarships to support this goal to recognize exemplary student service. This award is intended for graduate students in a professional program (Master’s SLP, Au.D., or SLPD) who have shown exemplary service. Examples of service may include, but are not limited to, community service, service to the department or university, or service to the greater discipline.

Award amount: Up to ten (10) $5,000 scholarships. This scholarship program is open to students from CAPCSD member programs, with membership paid in full by Monday, September 15, 2025. Only ONE scholarship application per paid CAPCSD membership will be accepted. Programs with multiple potential applicants should devise their internal process and select the student who will apply. The application can only be completed by the student.

Ph.D. Scholarships

CAPCSD is committed to addressing the Ph.D. shortage in communication sciences and disorders and offers this scholarship program for students pursuing a Ph.D. focused on an academic career in communication sciences and disorders. These scholarships support Ph.D. students in the dissertation phase of their graduate program, and applicants must intend to pursue an academic career in CSD.

When nominating an applicant for a PhD scholarship, member programs must consider students who will have advanced to candidacy (ABD) by June 15, 2026 and will not defend their dissertation earlier than January 1, 2027. Scholarship awardees must provide proof within the letter of support from their dissertation advisor that they fall within this eligibility window. Awardees unable to meet these requirements cannot defer the scholarship to the next funding cycle.

Only ONE scholarship application per paid CAPCSD membership will be accepted. Programs with multiple potential applicants should devise their internal process and select the student who will apply.
