Call for Program/Workshop Proposals

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) extends an invitation to all library professionals and vendors to join us in presenting educational and thought-provoking programs and workshops at the 11th National Conference of African American Librarians (NCAAL) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Conference serves as a national meeting for professionals in all areas of the information industry and provides opportunities to discuss varying issues, formulate new visions, celebrate achievements, and share best practices as we address issues relevant to libraries. The National Conference of African American Librarians is known for excellence as the largest conference devoted to African American library professionals.

You are invited to submit a proposal to present at the conference. Track types (select no more than two please) include:

• Sankofa/50th Anniversary -- BCALA past, present and future; the importance of learning from our past; facing our future with the lessons of the past; African diaspora; black history, migration; Afrofuturism; oral histories; exhibitions; preservation; cultural heritage; Black Wall Street; Tulsa Massacre; celebrating 50 years; etc.
• Innovation, Creativity, and Technology -- New or creative library services and technologies, best practices in the use of social media, mobile applications, eLearning and instructional design, tools for web development and content management, free or low-cost technologies, emerging industry trends and libraries of the future,etc.
• Bridge Building, Intersectionality, and Inclusion -- Cultural competency, sensitivity, humility, awareness; equity; inclusion, accessibility; intersectionality; identifying underserved or no served groups and populations; trauma-informed care; social justice; critical librarianship; institutional racism; privilege and oppression;
• Collections, Programs, and Services -- Authors literature; programming instruction; emerging technology media; diverse voices; the power of storytelling; early literacy; engaging spaces. Cultural programming; authors; literature; preservation; reference research; archives special collections; digitalization; collection development; Census 2020; building healthy communities, families, and workplaces; etc.
• Advocacy, Outreach, and Collaboration -- Outreach; Literacy; Advocacy; library role in times of crisis; building community partnerships; collaboration coordination with other government agencies and community groups; multi-institutional collaboration; user experiences, friends groups, and foundations; etc.
• Leadership, Management, Development and Organization-- Leadership development; staff development ; training; mentoring; organizational culture; human resources; institutional change; public policies; diversity programs; diversity plans; data-driven decision making; institutional pressures; strategic planning; buildings facilities; assessment; evaluation; budgeting grant writing; work-life balance; etc.
• Retirees -- Planning for Retirement; Volunteering in Retirement; Retirees Returning to the Workforce; Learning in Retirement; Post-retirement; Staying Active in the Profession; and more.
• Health, Wellness, and Medical -- Health Information Literacy; Nutrition; Therapy Dogs; Stress Reduction; Yoga; Meditation; Consumer Health; Clinical Outreach; Health Sciences Librarianship; Medical Librarianship; Opioid Crisis; Health Disparities; Evidenced-based Medicine; Public Health; Health Literacy, and more.

Program Proposal Instructions
The 11th NCAAL proposals must be submitted online. It is best to have as much information as possible before you begin entering your proposal. Incomplete proposals cannot be saved or revised at any time prior to the submission deadline date. A confirmation message will be e-mailed to the Primary Speaker when the proposal has been submitted.
Submission Guidelines
A proposal that includes all of the following will be considered:

• Name and contact information for principal contact
• Complete contact information for all speakers: include name, title, employer or affiliation, email address, telephone/fax numbers (if more than one person will be presenting)
• Title of the proposed program
• Program format and length
• A brief (100 words or less) description of the program for conference program purposes
• Three learning outcomes
• Audiovisual/equipment requirements (if any)
• Biographical statement of the presenter(s) up to 50 words per presenter
• Unique, original, innovative approach or process

Selection Criteria
The 11th NCAAL Conference Programming Committee will evaluate the content of the proposals for relevance to the conference theme, clarity, originality, and timeliness.
Successful proposals will:

• Identify critical issues in Librarianship that will be treated in the program
• Demonstrate how the audience will be engaged in the program
• Have a high degree of relevance to the projected conference attendees
• Contain program content that can be repurposed for continued discussion after the conference
• Be unique and innovative or raise issues that have not yet been widely examined
• Be supported by scholarly research and/or statistics or present new research and/or statistics.
