2019 Section on Surgery (SOSu) Abstracts Program

Rules of Abstract Submission: Abstracts are submitted with the understanding that the data and essential substance of the work are original. Originality requires that the data are not part of any other work previously presented or being considered for presentation at a national or international scientific meeting or organization where papers are chosen through a peer review process (i.e., not by invitation). Data that are published or electronically available in a peer-reviewed journal before the date of the AAP-SOSu meeting are not permissible. However, any work submitted to a journal that will not be in print before the date of the AAP-SOSu meeting is submissible. Importantly, any work deemed to have violated these rules is subject to abstract withdrawal and to a ban from submission of any work by the author(s) to the AAP-SOSu for a period of 3 years. The only exception is that abstracts submitted to, accepted for, and presented at, the American College of Surgeons Surgical Forum in the same calendar year are permitted for duplicate submission to and presentation at the AAP-SOSu without penalty. Data presented in a local city, county, or state presentation or at the authors’ institution, such as at a host institution-sponsored local research day, citywide society meeting, or statewide meeting, may be submitted without penalty. Novel or preliminary data previously presented only in the context of an invited lecture are also permissible.

Abstract Format: Abstracts will follow this structure: Background/Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. Total word count will not exceed 300. One Table or Figure may be submitted with a given Abstract and will be excluded from the word count. Authors should designate under the appropriate tab that the abstract is either Clinical or Basic/Translational. Reports of experience with a single case (i.e., “Case Reports”) will be rejected.

Rosenkrantz Competition: The Rosenkrantz award competition is open to surgical residents and training fellows. It is the responsibility of the presenting author to secure the permission of his/her mentor (PI) to submit an abstract for the Rosenkrantz Competition. This permission is necessary given the mandatory submission of a companion manuscript to be considered for publication in the AAP-SOSu meeting issue of the Journal of Pediatric Surgery. IMPORTANT: An abstract selected for the Rosenkrantz Competition that is either withdrawn or the required manuscript is not submitted will result in a 3-year penalty for all authors listed on the original abstract.

Program: The Pediatric Surgery Residents Conference takes place on Friday morning followed by the start of the 3-day surgical educational program. Rosenkrantz oral abstracts take place on Saturday morning followed by Rosenkrantz oral poster presentations during Saturday lunch. Posters are hung Friday through Sunday with no formal presentation. Abstract presentations take place Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. To compose the strongest academic meeting, the program committee will determine the final presentation format. Withdrawal of a non-Rosenkrantz abstract after you have accepted will require a written letter of justification. Any questions about the program should be directed to Vivian Thorne .

This year, we will be accepting abstracts describing quality improvement projects. These abstracts may be eligible for free MOC Part 4 credit through the AAP’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Portfolio. Additional details are available here.
